Born Park Soo Young on September 3, 1996, on Jeju Island, South Korea, Joy is the oldest of three daughters and grew up with two younger sisters. Unlike the other original Red Velvet members, Joy did not come through SM Entertainment's SM Rookies pre-debut program. Instead, she trained for approximately two and a half years through SM's traditional trainee system before being selected to debut. She later graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA), where she majored in Music.
Joy officially debuted with Red Velvet in 2014 and was the group's youngest member for several months before Yeri joined in 2015. Over the years, she has successfully expanded beyond music into acting, starring in dramas including The Liar and His Lover, Tempted, The One and Only, and Once Upon a Small Town. In 2021, she became Red Velvet's second soloist with the special remake album Hello, further showcasing her warm vocals and bright musical style.
