About i-dle

Background

i-dle (아이들), formerly known as (G)I-DLE ((여자)아이들), is a five-member K-pop girl group under Cube Entertainment consisting of Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi and Shuhua. The group originally debuted as six members on May 2, 2018, with the mini album I Am and title track "LATATA." Former member Soojin left the group in August 2021. Known for unusually extensive involvement in their own music, i-dle has built much of its identity around songwriting, production and concepts developed by the members themselves. Leader Soyeon has written and produced many of the group's title tracks, while Minnie and Yuqi have developed substantial songwriting catalogs of their own.

The group's history has included several major transformations. After establishing themselves with songs including "LATATA," "HANN (Alone)," "LION," "Oh my god" and "HWAA," i-dle entered an extended hiatus following Soojin's departure in 2021. They returned as five members in March 2022 with "TOMBOY" and their first studio album, I Never Die, beginning one of the most successful periods of their career. The group followed with major hits including "Nxde," "Queencard," "Super Lady," "Fate" and "Klaxon." In May 2025, seven years after debuting as (G)I-DLE, the members officially rebranded the group as i-dle, removing the "G" and parentheses from their name. The change reflected their desire to move beyond labels based specifically on gender while retaining "idle," the central identity they had carried since debut.

Fun Facts about i-dle Members

  • i-dle debuted with six members but currently promotes with five. Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi and Shuhua remain in the group, while Soojin departed in 2021.

    • The group's current lineup represents four different places of origin. Miyeon and Soyeon are Korean, Minnie is Thai, Yuqi is Chinese and Shuhua is Taiwanese.

    • Soyeon had already appeared on two major survival programs before the group debuted. She competed on Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapstar 3 before launching a solo career and eventually becoming i-dle's leader.

    • Miyeon trained at YG Entertainment for years before joining Cube. She trained during the lengthy development period of YG's next girl group and knew future BLACKPINK members before either group debuted.

    • Soojin nearly debuted in another girl group before i-dle. She was part of VIVIDIVA's pre-debut lineup under the stage name N.Na.

    • Minnie became Cube Entertainment's first Thai idol. She moved from Bangkok to South Korea as a teenager despite initially knowing very little Korean.

    • Yuqi was born and raised in Beijing. Her career eventually expanded beyond K-pop into Chinese music and television, including the popular variety show Keep Running.

    • Shuhua originally dreamed more about acting than becoming a singer. She attended an arts school in Taiwan before moving to South Korea after passing Cube's audition.

    • Soyeon wrote i-dle's debut song. Having a rookie group's own leader help create its debut title track was an early indication that the members would play an unusually large role in their music.

    • The members' voices are deliberately very different from one another. Miyeon's clear and powerful delivery, Minnie's dreamy tone, Yuqi's unusually deep voice, Soyeon's sharp rap style and Shuhua's lighter tone allow their songs to shift character quickly.

    • Three members have become established songwriters. Soyeon, Minnie and Yuqi all have substantial writing and composition credits.

    • Their songwriting styles are noticeably different. Soyeon's work often emphasizes concepts, hooks and dramatic structure, Minnie frequently gravitates toward dreamy or emotional sounds, and Yuqi often explores pop-rock and emotionally direct songwriting.

    • Miyeon and Soyeon became virtual K-pop stars only months after debut. Their participation in K/DA's "POP/STARS" introduced them to millions of League of Legends players around the world.

    • Soyeon's animated counterpart Akali became so popular that Riot used her again in True Damage. That project allowed Soyeon to perform alongside artists including Becky G, Keke Palmer, Duckwrth and Thutmose.

    • The group's Queendom appearance helped establish its reputation for conceptual performances. "LION" in particular became one of the defining songs of their early career.

    • Their first years included a remarkable variety of concepts. Within a relatively short period, they moved from the tropical-influenced "LATATA" to the darker "HANN," Latin-inspired "Senorita," boom-bap-influenced "Uh-Oh" and theatrical "LION."

    • i-dle's career can almost be divided into pre- and post-"TOMBOY" eras. The 2022 comeback followed their most uncertain period and instead became the beginning of their biggest commercial run.

    • The album containing "TOMBOY" was literally called I Never Die. Given the uncertainty surrounding the group during its hiatus, the title carried an unusually direct symbolic meaning.

    • "Nxde" intentionally used a provocative title to challenge the assumptions people made when seeing it. The song's message argues that removing clothing does not remove a person's intellect or individuality.

    • Soyeon reportedly searched Marilyn Monroe online while developing "Nxde" and was frustrated by the sexualized results. Monroe's intelligence, reading habits and desire to be taken seriously subsequently became important reference points for the concept.

    • "Queencard" intentionally sounds exaggerated and slightly ridiculous. Its humor is part of the concept rather than accidental, using over-the-top confidence to poke fun at impossible beauty expectations.

    • "Fate" became a hit despite not being the title track of its album. Its organic chart rise showed that listeners could drive an album track into mainstream success without the usual title-track promotional strategy.

    • The members renewed their contracts with Cube Entertainment together in 2024. The decision ended months of speculation about whether the group would remain with the company after their original contracts approached expiration.

    • They announced the renewal in an extremely i-dle way. During the 2024 Melon Music Awards, Soyeon used an acceptance speech to confirm that all five members had renewed together.

    • The group waited until its seventh anniversary to change its name. On May 2, 2025, (G)I-DLE officially became i-dle.

    • Removing the "G" had symbolic importance. The members wanted their identity to be less restricted by a label explicitly defining them as a "girl" group.

    • The name change did not erase their previous history. Albums released before 2025 continue to carry the (G)I-DLE name, making both spellings correct depending on the period being discussed.

    • The group has three members with significant solo music catalogs. Soyeon, Minnie and Yuqi are particularly involved in writing their own solo material, while Miyeon has also established herself as a solo vocalist.

    • Miyeon is the oldest member but Soyeon is the leader. Their dynamic is a useful reminder that Korean idol groups do not always assign leadership based purely on age.

    • Shuhua's growth is one of the most visible within the group. She debuted after a relatively short training period while still learning Korean and gradually became a considerably more confident vocalist and performer.

    • Yuqi's deep voice initially made her insecure. It eventually became one of her biggest advantages because it makes her immediately recognizable within both group and solo songs.

    • Minnie's voice serves almost the opposite function. Her breathy, atmospheric delivery has become particularly effective in intros, bridges and songs requiring a dreamlike mood.

    • The group's multinational lineup has never prevented the members from participating directly in Korean songwriting. Minnie and Yuqi both developed significant composition catalogs despite Korean not being their first language.

    • i-dle has gradually shifted from being described as a "self-producing girl group" to simply being recognized for its songwriting. The members' creative involvement now spans years of albums, solo releases and songs written for other artists.

    • Their career survived one of the most difficult transitions a group can face. Losing a popular member during a major controversy could have permanently derailed the group, but the remaining five members reorganized and entered their most commercially successful period afterward.
