Born Yoo Kyung-wan on November 1, 1996, Jeongyeon legally changed her name to Yoo Jeong Yeon while in the third grade after being teased because her birth name sounded masculine. She comes from a talented family. Her father, Yoo Chang-joon, worked as a private chef for former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung before serving as the head chef of the Seoul Plaza Hotel for more than two decades. Jeongyeon also has two older sisters, including actress Gong Seungyeon, whose success in entertainment inspired her own dreams of becoming a performer.
Although she failed a JYP Entertainment audition as a child, Jeongyeon refused to give up. She successfully passed JYP's 6th Open Audition on March 1, 2010, eventually earning a place on SIXTEEN and debuting with TWICE on October 20, 2015. Known for her stable vocals, dependable personality, and caring nature, Jeongyeon quickly became one of the group's emotional anchors. In 2020 and 2021, she temporarily stepped away from activities to focus on her health, later revealing that her anxiety and panic symptoms were connected to Cushing's Syndrome.
