Background
Shownu was born Son Hyun Woo on June 18, 1992, in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, South Korea. An only child, he developed an interest in performing at a young age and was particularly inspired by South Korean singer Rain. His admiration for Rain motivated him to audition for JYP Entertainment in 2009, where he earned a place as a trainee. During his approximately two years at the company, he trained alongside future members of GOT7 before eventually leaving to pursue other opportunities. He later worked as a backup dancer for Lee Hyori, appearing in performances and music videos, including "Bad Girls" and "Going Crazy."
After joining Starship Entertainment, Shownu became part of the pre-debut project group NUBOYZ alongside future MONSTA X members Wonho and Joohoney, as well as rapper #Gun. In 2014, he participated in Mnet's survival competition NO.MERCY, which led to his selection as a member of MONSTA X. The group officially debuted on May 14, 2015, with the EP Trespass. As the group's leader and main dancer, Shownu became known for his disciplined work ethic, powerful stage presence, and dependable leadership, helping MONSTA X establish an international fanbase.
