Background
RM (알엠), born Kim Namjoon (김남준) on September 12, 1994, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, record producer and leader of the internationally acclaimed K-pop group BTS (Bangtan Boys) under BIGHIT MUSIC. Born in Seoul and raised in Ilsan, Goyang, South Korea, RM developed an early interest in literature, poetry and music. He was an academically gifted student who reportedly achieved an IQ score of 148 and ranked among the highest-performing students in South Korea on standardized examinations. His interest in hip-hop began during elementary school after hearing Epik High's "Fly," and he subsequently started writing lyrics and recording music. As a teenager, he became active in South Korea's underground hip-hop scene under the stage name Runch Randa, performing and collaborating with other aspiring rappers before joining Big Hit Entertainment. His talent as a rapper and lyricist played an important role in the early development of BTS, which officially debuted on June 13, 2013, with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool and the title track "No More Dream."
As BTS's leader and one of its principal songwriters, RM has helped shape the group's musical identity through lyrics exploring youth, identity, mental health, ambition, social expectations and personal growth. He has contributed to numerous BTS songs, including "Spring Day," "Fake Love," "Boy With Luv," "Black Swan" and "Life Goes On." Beyond his work with BTS, RM has developed an acclaimed solo career, releasing the mixtapes RM (2015) and mono. (2018), followed by the studio albums Indigo (2022) and Right Place, Wrong Person (2024). His solo music draws from hip-hop, alternative rock, R&B, jazz and experimental pop, reflecting his interest in artistic exploration and collaboration. RM is also recognized for his passion for visual art, literature and nature, which has inspired the fan-coined term "namjooning." After completing his mandatory South Korean military service on June 10, 2025, RM returned to civilian life and continued his career as a member of BTS and an individual artist.
Fun facts
RM (BTS) Fun Facts
RM taught himself English partly by watching the American sitcom Friends. His mother introduced him to the series, and he watched episodes repeatedly, first with Korean subtitles and eventually without them. He has credited the show with helping him develop the English skills that later became valuable during BTS's international promotions.
His interest in hip-hop began after discovering Epik High's "Fly." Hearing the song as a child changed how he thought about music. He became fascinated by the idea that rap could combine rhythm, storytelling, poetry, and personal experiences.
RM was writing poetry before he became a rapper. His early interest in literature helped him develop a love of wordplay, metaphors, and emotionally complex writing. These qualities eventually became defining features of his lyrics.
He knew Block B's Zico before either artist became a K-pop star. The two were connected through South Korea's underground hip-hop community, where they experimented with music and developed their identities as young rappers.
Rapper Sleepy played an important role in RM's discovery. After hearing RM perform, Sleepy helped connect him with producer Pdogg, eventually leading to an audition with Big Hit Entertainment. That connection became a turning point in RM's career.
BTS was originally developed around RM as a hip-hop-focused project. Before the group's final seven-member lineup was established, Big Hit Entertainment explored a different musical direction built around underground rappers. RM's involvement helped shape the group's early identity.
RM has a reputation for accidentally breaking things. BTS members have joked about his tendency to damage objects unintentionally, earning him the nickname "God of Destruction." The running joke contrasts with his thoughtful and composed public image.
He loves visiting art museums, even when traveling for work. Rather than spending all his free time shopping or sightseeing, RM often seeks out galleries and exhibitions. His visits have introduced fans to Korean and international artists.
His peaceful hobbies inspired the fan-created term "namjooning." ARMY uses the word to describe activities such as visiting museums, reading, cycling, walking through parks, and enjoying nature. The term has become closely associated with RM's approach to relaxation.
RM enjoys riding his bicycle near the Han River. Cycling gives him an opportunity to spend time outdoors and explore Seoul at his own pace. His affection for the activity also inspired his 2021 solo song "Bicycle."
He has a particular appreciation for Korean modern art. RM has publicly discussed artists such as Yun Hyong-keun, whose work influenced his solo album Indigo. His interest goes beyond collecting paintings to understanding the artists' experiences and philosophies.
The title of his album Indigo was partly inspired by painter Yun Hyong-keun. RM admired the artist's use of color and his belief that an artist's life experiences should inform their work. He incorporated these ideas into the album's themes of growth and reflection.
RM specifically wanted Youjeen of Cherry Filter to sing on "Wild Flower." He admired her powerful rock vocals and believed her voice was essential to the song's emotional impact. The collaboration became one of the defining features of his first studio album.
He collaborated with Epik High's Tablo on "All Day." The partnership was especially meaningful because Epik High had helped inspire RM's interest in hip-hop years earlier. It brought together an artist he admired as a child and the musician he had become.
RM used his solo album Indigo as a record of his twenties. Rather than treating the project as simply a collection of songs, he approached it as a personal archive documenting his experiences, emotions, relationships, and artistic development during that decade.
He collaborated with Erykah Badu on a song inspired by a Korean painter. "Yun," the opening track of Indigo, references Yun Hyong-keun and explores the relationship between humanity and art. RM felt Badu's voice could communicate the song's philosophical message.
RM has collaborated with musicians from several different genres. His work includes collaborations with artists such as HONNE, Anderson .Paak, Little Simz, Moses Sumney, and Fall Out Boy, reflecting his willingness to experiment beyond conventional K-pop and hip-hop.
He released an entire album while serving in the military. Right Place, Wrong Person was released in May 2024, although RM had already enlisted. The project was created before his service and allowed him to share new music while temporarily absent from public promotions.
RM wanted his second solo album to sound different from his previous work. For Right Place, Wrong Person, he worked with musicians associated with Korea's alternative and indie scenes, exploring unusual arrangements, experimental production, and more spontaneous performances.
He participated in writing every track on Right Place, Wrong Person. The album's eleven songs explore uncertainty, frustration, identity, and the experience of feeling out of place. His involvement helped make the project one of his most personal releases.
RM's solo documentary follows his creative life rather than presenting a traditional concert film. RM: Right People, Wrong Place documents the making of his second studio album and his reflections on identity, artistic freedom, and life outside his responsibilities as BTS's leader.
His documentary premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. The film was selected for the festival's Open Cinema program in 2024, bringing his personal creative journey to a major international film event.
RM delivered a speech at the United Nations in 2018. Speaking on behalf of BTS during an event associated with UNICEF, he encouraged young people to recognize their own experiences and find the confidence to speak for themselves.
He has used his public influence to support Korean cultural preservation. RM has made donations to organizations involved in restoring and preserving Korean artworks, helping make cultural heritage more accessible to future generations.
RM has been recognized for his support of the arts. His interest in cultural heritage and financial contributions have attracted attention from Korean cultural institutions, demonstrating that his influence extends beyond the music industry.
He shares a friendship tattoo with the other BTS members. RM's small number-seven tattoo is located near his right ankle. The matching tattoos symbolize the bond between the seven members and their shared experiences as a group.
RM played the saxophone when he returned from military service. During the June 2025 discharge celebration, he surprised reporters and fans by playing the instrument, creating a memorable and lighthearted moment during his return to civilian life.
He performed in a military band during his service. Although his responsibilities were different from his career as a recording artist, the assignment allowed him to continue participating in music while completing his military obligations.
RM often uses literature and philosophical ideas to explore personal experiences in his songwriting. His lyrics frequently address identity, uncertainty, ambition, loneliness, and self-acceptance. Rather than offering simple answers, many of his songs examine conflicting emotions and the difficulty of understanding oneself.
He has spoken about the difference between being RM and being Kim Namjoon. His solo projects increasingly explore the tension between his public responsibilities as BTS's leader and his private identity as an individual. This theme is especially prominent in Right Place, Wrong Person and its accompanying documentary.
