Background
SUGA (슈가), born Min Yoongi (민윤기) on March 9, 1993, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, record producer and member of the internationally acclaimed K-pop group BTS (Bangtan Boys) under BIGHIT MUSIC. Born and raised in Daegu, South Korea, SUGA developed an interest in hip-hop and music production during his early teenage years. He began writing lyrics and learning digital music production at approximately 13 years old, eventually becoming involved in Daegu's underground rap scene under the name Gloss. Before joining Big Hit Entertainment in 2010, he participated in the hip-hop crew D-Town, where he developed his abilities as a rapper, composer and producer. Initially interested in working professionally behind the scenes as a music producer, SUGA ultimately trained as an idol and debuted with BTS on June 13, 2013, through the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool and title track "No More Dream." As a member of BTS's rap line alongside RM and j-hope, he became known for his distinctive delivery, introspective lyrics and extensive involvement in the group's music.
Outside BTS, SUGA has established a successful solo career under the stage name Agust D, releasing the mixtapes Agust D (2016) and D-2 (2020), followed by his first official solo studio album, D-DAY (2023). His solo music frequently explores ambition, identity, mental health, social expectations and the emotional consequences of fame. As a producer, he has collaborated with artists including IU, PSY, Suran, Heize and Epik High, contributing to commercially successful songs beyond BTS's discography. In 2023, he embarked on the SUGA | Agust D Tour 'D-DAY', becoming the first BTS member to headline a solo concert tour. SUGA began his mandatory military alternative service in September 2023 and officially completed it on June 21, 2025. That same month, he announced a major charitable contribution of 5 billion Korean won to Severance Hospital to support a treatment center for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. As of October 2026, he remains a member of BTS and an influential figure in Korean hip-hop and music production.
