Carmen, born Nyoman Ayu Carmenita on March 28, 2006, grew up in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, as the third of four children. She was raised in a creative household—her father, Putu Gede Suastika, and her mother, singer Ayu Handayani, also operate a restaurant and a multi-arts studio in Bali. Carmen's early years were filled with music and performance, while her athletic side also shined when she won first place in the girls' high jump at the 2018 Bali Student Sports Week.
Carmen's dream of becoming a K-pop idol began after watching Girls' Generation's "The Boys" music video. Determined to pursue that dream, she secretly auditioned for SM Entertainment, performing Daniel Caesar's "Best Part" without telling her parents, who initially opposed the idea of her moving to South Korea. After successfully passing the audition, she spent years training before debuting with Hearts2Hearts in 2025, making history as SM Entertainment's first Indonesian idol.
