Born Joshua Hong (Korean name Hong Ji Soo) on December 30, 1995, in Los Angeles, California, Joshua grew up in a Korean-American household where he spoke Korean at home and English at school. Before pursuing music professionally, he was an active member of his church's Praise Team, where he regularly played the guitar and sang during worship services. His path into K-pop began unexpectedly when a Pledis Entertainment recruiter discovered him at Jangteo, a Korean cultural festival held in Los Angeles' Koreatown.
Joshua officially joined Pledis Entertainment after returning to the United States to finish his final school exams. He trained for approximately two years before debuting as SEVENTEEN's lead vocalist on May 26, 2015, with "Adore U." Since then, he has become known for his warm vocals, refined manners, multilingual communication skills, and calming presence within the group. As one of SEVENTEEN's English-speaking members, Joshua has also played an important role in connecting the group with international fans.
